Steve Holy didn’t receive one big break, but a series of small triumphs that led him to Nashville and country music stardom. Steeped in Elvis-era rock’n’roll, Steve is blessed with a clear voice and a wide vocal range, which he delivers effortlessly. His early rock influences combined with his love of country music were melded into an eclectic style–unequivocally country but with a diverse gumbo of sounds. He burst onto the country scene after signing with Curb Records in 1997.
In April of 2000, Steve released his second single from the Curb debut album Blue Moon that made it to the top 20 on the charts. His third single ‘The Hunger’ was also a top-20 hit. Steve gained star credibility with a number one hit single ‘Good Morning Beautiful.’ It stayed at number one for five straight weeks in 2002, which gave Steve household name recognition. The single was also featured in Jennifer Lopez’s movie Angel Eyes.
Steve has released two hit albums in four years with his latest single, ‘Cliff in Colorado,’ which will go on his Brand New Girlfriend album to be released soon. Steve writes about fifty percent of his own songs and uses other songwriters as well. But his exceptional voice, boyish good looks, and dramatic delivery keeps his growing legion of fans flocking to his concerts.
During our chat, Steve was laid-back and humble about his career. After taking some time off to build his dream house, Steve is back out on tour winning new fans with his extraordinary voice and charm.
“You nailed it when you said that my influences were eclectic. I was influenced by the early 50s artists like Elvis, Dean Martin, and Sam Cooke, the old R&B artists. I’m all over the place. Since I’m from Texas I listened to George Strait and I’m passionate about my influences. I think if you put all my influences in a pot and melted them, my own style would come out. So yes, my music is country but with hints of other genres mixed into the fabric of the sound.
“I did win a contest in Dallas, but I had a series of good fortunes that led me to Nashville. The contest got me a recording deal in Nashville where I recorded a track album of other artists. It didn’t go anywhere, but it was a learning experience for me. After that, I hired a manager with nothing to manage, but it looked professional. Around that time, I met Lyle Walker who wanted me to go to New Mexico to record an album. My manager suggested that we record in Nashville. Earlier, in my career, I had been performing gigs with an 11-year old girl and I ended up recording an album with her, which became LeAnn Rimes Early Years album.
“My very first album came out in 2000. I had a song ‘Make Me Beg,’ which was my first single that charted at 24. Then another song off the album, ‘There’s a Blue Moon out Tonight’ reached number 19 on the charts. And, a third song off that album ‘The Hunger’ also reached number 19 on the charts. Then we released the album which died in the stores... When we released the fourth single off the album in 2002, ‘Good Morning Beautiful’ it exploded, skyrocketing to number 1. It stayed there for five straight weeks which justified re-releasing the album.
“There was a two year gap in my career when I took some time off–more than I should. But now I’m back stronger than ever with a new single, ‘Cliff in Colorado,’ off the new album, which I’m out promoting on this tour,” Steve said.
Talking to Steve, I got the impression that he loves to be home but the road is a necessary way to stay in touch with his fans with new material. Between his relentless touring and recording hit music, Steve has longevity in the business. He is a hitmaker with major dude credentials. Steve Holy will perform November 5th at the Jax Fair.
