WHO: Captain Kid with This Waking Moment and The Working Title

To be quite honest, I generally hate pop or any commercial-driven music, but these Jacksonville locals are more than that. The first time I saw Captain Kid, I wasn’t exactly blown away, but there was something that did pique my interest: the power and drive this young band has. Never have I met so many young musicians with the kind of devotion and dedication towards their craft. All of their hard work has paid off, literally. A year later, they emerged from Vision Sounds Studio a little beat up, but with great new material. Vision Sound Studios is owned by Scott Fravala, who helped Red Jumpsuit Apparatus record the album that launched them into stardom.
Be sure to check them out, the performance gets better every show. EU sat down with Casey King and Alex Barian and we discussed male nudity, skinny dipping and gay chicken.
EU: How did you guys come to be Captain Kid?
CK: Well, Seth and Miguel met in Mexico City when they were eleven. Basically, we all played in three or four different bands before then, and finally we just all came together for Captain Kid.
AB: Captain Kid is a big, [incestuous] monster [from] other bands we've been in together.
EU: You started out working with Vision Sound, what was it like working with Scott [Fravala]?
AB: Scott's got a lot of really good ideas.
CK: He led a lot of our songs in the direction that they weren't going in at the time. He honestly gave us an idea of how to put our songs together better. So therefore, I think in the end we came out better songwriters because of it. We learned a little bit better how to produce ourselves because of him, so he helped out in that way.
EU: Who's the slut of the band?
CK: (Laughing) No comment.
AB: No comment. Ian. (Laughing) Miguel.
CK: Ian/Miguel.
EU: I've heard you guys frequently enjoy swimming naked together. What's up with that?
CK: That is true, we are all very close.
AB: Very comfortable in our sexuality.
CK: It's almost a daily thing.
AB: Seth jumped off the roof naked yesterday, actually, into the pool.
EU: Ever play gay chicken?
CK: Gay chicken, do tell.
EU: Never heard of gay chicken?
AB: I don't even know what that is.
EU: Two guys will make each other a little awkward, like leaning in for a kiss.
CK: Oh, like, ok.
AB: No, but now I'm extremely compelled to try it.
EU: Tell me about Reg and what his role is in all of this.
AB: Sugardaddy. Reg is our Sugardaddy.
CK: Scott originally sent our music out to his people, and Reg was one of the people to respond and he sounded the most promising. So, for about four to five months we kept our relationship going with him and then he arranged for us to fly out to L.A. and showcase for Jimmy Iovine of Interscope Records, and next thing you know they're telling us that they want to sign us.
EU: Who are you currently signed with? Interscope?
AB: Interscope/ Treasure Chest.
CK: Treasure Chest is Reg's company.
EU: Casey, you used to tour around the world with a Christian group playing covers. What was that like?
CK: Believe it or not, it really made me love what I do more than anything because, I mean, I'm not particularly religious anymore, but those Christian kids, they love music, they love the scene, they get into it more than many of the shows that I've seen that were by secular bands. It just really gave me a passion for it and made me decide that this is what I want to do with my life.
EU: How does it differ from your experience with Captain Kid?
CK: Ummm. (Both Laughing) We just make fun of everything.
AB: Male nudity.
CK: Nothing is holy, like, we don't really have any, uh, morals? (Laughing) That's pretty much it, it's all about fun now. You don't have to follow a strict set of rules, it's really just about playing the music and enjoy playing the music.
EU: If you had your choice, what tour would you put together?
AB: You mean, like other bands?
EU: Yeah.
CK: We had this one idea for the "Kid" tour. It's really, really cheesy.
AB: There's another band that just got signed to Universal Motown and their album is about to come out called, "Forever the Sickest Kids." We're working with the same producer.
CK: So we figured we could have them, Captain Kid, Comeback Kid...
AB: Scary Kids Scaring Kids.
CK: Yeah.
AB: And anyone with the name kid in their band name can hop on, regardless of genre.
CK: It'd be the epitome of cheesy. That's what we're about.
EU: What's your favorite body part.
AB: Of Casey's?
EU: Yeah.
AB: Uh. He has gorgeous eyes.
CK: I'm fond of your elbows. The inside of them. You know what I'm talking about.
AB: Oh, yeah.
EU: Are you setting up a tour now?
CK: Actually we have a tour scheduled for the beginning of next year. Right now we're just calling it the high school tour. There's this new program, kind of like VH1 Save the Music. Only they're actually doing something.
AB: (Laughing) Wow.
CK: They actually contacted us and it sounds like a really great idea, we're really down for supporting that. That's going to be our first tour, but it's actually not out of town, it's all around Jacksonville.
Catch Captain Kid live at The Murray Hill Theatre on Saturday with Boys of Summer and Matlock and on Sunday at Jack Rabbits with This Waking Moment and The Working Title.
