the chaos fair
Downtown’s other party

“The Chaos Fair is an artistic wonderland of multidisciplinary expression. This annual festival of the senses boasted more than 30 artists in 2006. We welcome talented groups or individuals, especially original material,” states chaosfair.com.
Although many years ago I remember referring to the Chaos Fair as the “Goth Prom,” it has since evolved into quite an inclusive art and music festival that takes place downtown on May 18 at the Historic Homes Block at 113 East Bay Street (behind the Florida Theatre). If you find that you have a gap between films, or maybe you’re feeling a little urban but have no interest in the films, you can still come down and check out some music and art.

Admission is only $10, and from the freaky kids with face paints to the culturally curious, everyone is sure to be entertained. Past years have included everything from Al Letson doing spoken word and mactruQue playing music to Chad Jasmine, Shawn Lightfoot, and a litany of other local talents, so you never know what you will find.

In its seventh year, the Chaos fair will be including a fashion show featuring the clothing of Wolfgang, House of Kilroy and Three Muses, alongside the art, sculpture, and music. As an event that has existed even longer than the film festival, this year’s theme of “Waking Chaos” is a nice complement to the thriving concept of our urban core, making this another terrific downtown event. Everyone has a reason to hang out downtown this weekend.

“We have an atypically wide variety of mediums for this show. All of the artists have a connection through location, being Florida, but we will see artists expressing themselves through cloth, glass, metal, clay, and of course paint,” said Kimberly Stafford, Art Director for Chaos Fair. “Viewers can expect to get an eye full of some wonderful new talent combined with professional seasoning.”
