Sleeping At Last
Keep on score

In a popular new trend ushered in by the Internet and bands such as Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, more and more bands are finding that they can release an album themselves and not be tethered to a label in order to successfully distribute their music. Sleeping at Last is a prime example of putting an album out right.

"Sounds like Radiohead" could pretty much be a whole genre unto itself these days, but with the exception of Ryan O'Neal's crooning, Thom Yorke-ish vocals, Sleeping at Last doesn't really sound like Radiohead. This exquisitely produced album incorporates gorgeous string arrangements juxtaposed by guitar-centered rock. Every song is delicately woven to show the varied musical dynamics of this talented trio.

Like Jeremy Enigk, Sleeping at Last has prayerful and emotionally rife songs such as 'Needle & Thread,' but the fundamentals of the group rest in the piano and acoustic guitar melodies that start simple and haunting then explode into rocking verses that harken back to the early days of the "emo" genre (Sunny Day Real Estate). Expect songs such as 'Envelopes' to explode off of the stage live, while the more gentle songs such as 'Levels of Light' fold the rock into the middle of otherwise quiet tunes.

Although not in the least bit avant-garde or experimental, Sleeping at Last has made an exceptional album in Keep on Score that will sit perfectly on your playlist between Radiohead and Jeremy Enigk without being precisely derivative of either.

Sleeping at Last performs live with Shangrala and Matlock at the Murray Hill Theatre on Tuesday, May 15.
