organic produce

Native Sun, is of course, my hands-down favorite source of organic and natural produce. The location in Mandarin is smaller than the huge place they’ve got at Baymeadows and 9A. If you haven’t gone down to take a gander at their newer locale, it might be time to do so, especially if you’ve got a hankering for organic bananas.

The relative newcomer to the organic market biz here in Jax is Grassroots Market, which recently opened their doors in Five-Points. It’s not a huge market, but they do carry just about every popular organic and green line food you’ll find elsewhere. They have a decent fresh produce selection and a good variety of organic cheeses.

When I attended the Friday Farmer’s Market at Hemming Plaza, there was only one fresh produce vendor, Fruit of the Spirit, but they did have a wide variety of fruits and veggies, some of which were grown right here in the Jacksonville area. Just ask the busy vendors and they can give you a hint as to what was grown right here in the Sunshine State.

grow your own food

At the non-organic friendly big chain supermarkets, it’s hard to tell what your fruits and veggies have been treated with. One way to go green is to grow your own veggies. No gas is wasted in transporting the veggies across several states (or countries) and you’ll know exactly how it was grown. You might be surprised to learn that there are several city gardens in Jacksonville. Any resident of Duval County can use the garden space, provided they don’t use the produce for sale or profit, but as a way to supplement their diet. While there are 5 such gardens in Jacksonville, the Urban Gardening program is always looking for suitable land and a way to pay for the water used on that land. If you’d like to donate to the Urban Gardening Program or if you would like to be a part of it, call Mary Puckett at (904) 387-8850.
