Torch

I grew up with a couple of the children of Lynyrd Skynyrd and most of these young people didn’t perceive the music of their parents as the end-all-be-all of the greater concept of music, but Devon Allman’s band, Honeytribe, is a perfect example of music industry nepatism. Devon Allman is the son of rock legend Gregg Allman, and the Allman Brothers wrote amazing music, but that does not constitute Devon’s place in the annals of Southern Rock. The children of great musicians do not necessarily make great musicians themselves. I’m sure they put on a hell of a rock show, but placing Devon’s name as a prefix to this band does not do the Allman name, or Honeytribe, any justice.

This album is not terrible. It has the burly grit of the new blues rock movement, complete with belted Dr. John-esque vocals and a sense of nostalgia to the almost-Allman-esque guitars, but the truth is that this band does not have the balls or soul of the Allman Brothers or the real Lynyrd Skynyrd. Instead it is rich with a sullen, secondary attempt at Southern Rock. It is trite, derivative, and void of the inspiration it takes to end up on a Publix commercial.

This record is fit for a collection of already staid and exausted Southern Rock cliché’s that even the Allman Brothers would not attempt. Best of luck to Gregg’s son in creating a career that will blossom solely off of the success of his father, so long as he realizes exactly that.
