FINAL FOUR

So, we get into the second weekend of this Tournament, and wouldn’t it be interesting if all four #1 seeds got into the Final Four? I would guess that NO ONE has chosen all four #1’s to make it to Atlanta next weekend.

But let me tell you that there is a damn good chance Florida, North Carolina, Kansas, and Ohio State can do it. They have the strength within their respective teams to win their next two games this weekend, and I would love to see it happen.

And you should, too, because isn’t that what this is all about? Don’t we want to see the best teams in college basketball play for the right to be champion? A lot of you would argue against me, saying you want to see a ‘Cinderella.’ But there isn’t one surviving this year, and so I say let’s go for the #1’s. We shall see who comes out of it, and it will be interesting to watch, for sure.

Last weekend, I was in Sneakers Sports Grille finishing up my internet broadcast. A number of Florida Gator fans were filing in, getting ready to watch the basketball team play the first of their NCAA Tournament games. As I was walking by the tables, you wouldn’t believe what the topic of conversation was about.

The excitement was about Spring football and Tim Tebow. The fact that the basketball team was playing only meant it was a great reason for some Gator fans to be able to gather to talk about what the football team was getting ready for. I’d bet that most fans in there could MAYBE name two or three of the starting five that won the National Championship last year. On the other hand, they could probably name the entire starting line up of the football team.

Let’s be realistic here, could we? The University of Florida is a football school. It always has been, and it always will be. This weekend, more Gator fans will be interested in Spring Football PRACTICES, than the Gators possibly going to the Final Four.

And that, to me, is a complete joke. It makes me wonder why Billy Donovan is still the head coach in Gainesville, to be honest. Unless he’s getting a very nice check, which I assume he is, from the school, he is way too good to be toiling at a football school that is going to stay that way, no matter how many titles the hoopsters will snag. What a farce.

JAGUARS

Well, well, well…another Jaguar player speeding down the road, carrying a gun without a permit. Should we be surprised anymore? Are we holding these guys to some higher standard, and if so, is it fair?

Hey, plenty of people get stopped by cops for speeding or some sort of traffic violation. I know I’ve been guilty a couple of times in my driving career, and I’ve simply paid the fine, while my auto insurance costs escalated right afterwards. So, for a Jaguar player, or ANY pro athlete, for that matter, to catch headlines for doing that is certainly noteworthy, and fans will be interested in what will happen.

Now, carrying a gun is another matter. Should NFL players be carrying firearms ILLEGALLY? Two Jag players now have been busted with guns without permits, and that’s a bunch of crap, personally. It makes no sense to me. Are these guys feeling as if they need to protect themselves from society? Do Jaguars players ‘HAVE TO BE PACKIN’?’, as they would say in the ‘hood? And as for racism, my feeling is there is racism everywhere in the world, but there are parts of the planet where it is worse than in other parts, for sure.

AND, all races are racist, thank you.

So, this whole thing with a number of guys getting busted is certainly a cause for concern for Wayne Weaver and his franchise, especially from an image standpoint, as they are trying desperately to sell this team on being great for the city, etc. Perhaps Wayne should sit down with the boys and explain to them what the deal is, and hear their thoughts.

NASCAR

Let me ask you this, my friends. Do NASCAR drivers earn good money? Should they get more for winning a race than they get currently?

Last week, Jimmie Johnson earned $233,261 for winning the Atlanta race, but Vijay Singh won $990,000 for winning a PGA Tour event in Orlando. In a way, that’s a wild comparison, but still, it makes you wonder if NASCAR drivers are tremendously underpaid. They certainly have done their fair share in generating millions more fans to their sport, and they certainly go through a ton of work to win a race every single week. In effect, they place their lives on the line to win. Do PGA Tour golfers do that? I’d say no.

So, give it some thought as you watch TV this Sunday, as to who makes what. Also, think about that when you tell your kids what they might want to be when they grow up.

LAST WORD

Here’s a shocker! WWE wrestlers doing steroids! Imagine that! C’mon, people.

Adam Copeland (Edge), Shane Helms (The Hurricane), and others were listed on documents seized by authorities in a nationwide steroids investigation as having been ‘clients’ for various substances, most of which aren’t so legal. If you ever for a second thought that professional wrestlers were ever 100% clean of any enhancements, then you were tremendously naïve, in my book. The WWE to me is a joke, anyway, even though Vince McMahon, the founder of the WWE, has made hundreds of millions of dollars. I think its great actually that perhaps some of those guys will get caught doing something bad/wrong, and the whole sport will suffer. The WWE is a joke and a totally fake entity.
