As the Creative Director for Entertaining U I find myself constantly saturated by the world of design… and by choice too. Since I sit in front of a computer composing layouts and graphics almost all day long, my guilty pleasure for my free moments are my magazines and blog subscriptions. And one my favorite things to indulge myself in is interior design. I like to think of my subscriptions as a little hole into the super big and overwhelming world of design, and honestly, I don’t know where I’d be without them.
There are so many great home and design magazines it’s hard to just pick a few! But my personal favorites have become my old, trusty standbys that I wait for eagerly each month.
This is definitely my favorite magazine and here’s why: 1. Great clean design. 2. It’s practical and features things that average person can afford. 3. Foward-thinking and classic at the same time.
Blueprint magazine is part of the Martha Stewart mega-company. It’s a fabulous magazine that features all the everyday things you need for your life and home. It truly is a great mixture of your classic Martha Stewart, but has the edginess and practicality of Domino.
I can’t really mention interior design magazines without including Elle Decor. It’s the Vogue of the interior design world. Most if the things featured in this glossy are over-priced and expensive, however, it usually manages to set the bar on inspirations for the new season.
Dwell magazine does a really good job of finding cool and unique homes all around the world. I can usually count on Dwell to be on the cutting edge of the art comminuity and the interior design community. Dwell is very modern, yet comfortable at the same time.
The greatest thing about blogs is that they are ultimately free and open for anyone to read. I feel like when I read them I am literally traveling all over the world in and stepping into some of the most amazing homes on the planet. Not only are you opened to the most amazing homes in the world, but the most amazing shops too. These days, if you live in the middle of nowhere or you are the only person in your entire town who gives a damn about design, you don’t have to have the hippest little store around the corner, nope, you just need the Internet! Now, the Internet is cumbersome, I will admit that, but by way of these lofty little blogs, in a matter of days you will have a whole bookmark folder full of links and shopping galore. Keep in mind, blogs are like one big family tree, if you find one or two blogs you like, you will soon know fifty of them.
ohjoy.blogs.com
Joy has impeccable taste and she’s not overwhelming in the least. With about one or two posts a day, I can always count on her to be brief, have a great photo, and be totally inspiring. She posts about a lot of interior digs, but she doesn’t stop there, she will also comment on clothing design, great jewelry and accessories, floral designs and even amazingly designed food.
designsponge.blogspot.com
Design*Sponge is the goldmine of the design blogging community, and I’m not lying. There is hardly anything that gets by Grace. If it’s something cool, she’s either the first one to nab it and point it out or she’ll reiterate someone else’s find for all of her loyal readers to love.
sfgirlbybay.blogspot.com
Victoria describes her blog as ‘bohemian modern style from a san francisco girl.’ This blog is full of inspiration. Victoria often features things from her own home that can range from flea market-finds to retro-vintage pieces. Also she has one of the most comprehensive library of links to design sites! Visit this blog and you will be taken all over the world of design.
Even though I can hardly keep up with my own blog like some of the other pros out there, you can check it out online at rachelbestblogs.blogspot.com.
